TWO men charged with involvement in a plot to blow up nine transatlantic jets appeared in court today.

Nabeel Hussain, 22, of Chingford, is charged with conspiracy to murder and engaging in conduct with the intention of committing acts of terrorism while Usman Saddique, 24, of Walthamstow, faces one count of preparing to smuggle explosives on board aircraft for an act of terrorism.

Mr Justice Calvert-Smith ruled the pair should be tried next year alongside 11 others accused of plotting to smuggle home-made liquid explosives aboard passenger jets.

Also charged with conspiracy to murder between January 1 and August 10, 2006, are Ahmed Abdullah Ali, aka Abdullah Ali Ahmed Khan, 25, from Walthamstow, Tanvir Hussain, 25, from Leyton, Umar Islam (born Brian Young), 28, from High Wycombe, Waheed Arafat Khan, 25, from Walthamstow, Assad Ali Sarwar, 26, from High Wycombe, Osman Adam Khatib, 19, Walthamstow, Ibrahim Savant, 25, Walthamstow, Waheed Zaman, 22, Walthamstow, Mohammed Yasar Gulzar, 25, Barking, and Mohammed Shamin Uddin, 35, Stoke Newington.

They also face charges of engaging in conduct with the intention of committing acts of terrorism to smuggle explosives on to aircraft, under the Terrorism Act 2006.

Saddique, and Donald Stewart Whyte, 21, High Wycombe, are accused of preparing to smuggle explosives on board aircraft with the intention of committing acts of terrorism.

The people charged were due to enter pleas at the Old Bailey today but the hearing was adjourned until May 18 after a problem video-linking to them in prison.

The trial is expected to take place next January.

Cossor Ali, 24, of Walthamstow, the wife of Ahmed Abdullah Ali, will be tried separately next year.

Mrs Ali is also charged with failing to disclose information which could prevent an act of terrorism.
