The final Chelmsford and District League match away at the powerful RHP Chelmsford saw them defeated on all rinks. Bill Cook, Frank Dewhurst, Don Hedges, Keith Lodge 20-23; Mike Nash, Dave Stacey, Geoff Hyatt, Ron Oddy 14-23; Ralph Cooper, Len Harris, George Miller, George Finbow 13-26. Away to Saffron Walden in the Essex & Herts League rinks were shared for four valuable points. Cliff Morris, Gerald Murfitt, Geoff Hyatt 24-12; Ken McKinley, Valerie Finbow, George Finbow with the final wood of the game won 15-14; Irene Morris, George Miller, Ron Oddy 7-17; Win Hyatt, Dave Stacey, Don Hedges 6-26.

BUCKHURST HILL are winners of the Forest District League having won all their matches.

Meanwhile Margaret Langwith won the Buckhurst Hill ladies' Two-Wood Singles competition, with Margaret Dainton runner up. An Albert Shield match against Rainham saw Hill winning on both rinks.

On Members Day, 38 ladies played with Peggy Howes taking the prize, and a presentation was made to ladies' captain Carol Freeman from the lady members.

Aldersbrook were visitors for a four rink mixed friendly, which resulted in a draw. The annual captain versus vice captain friendly competition saw skips Barry Northcote and Roger Pike secure wins for captain Alan Hawkins, and for vice captain John Burdikin the winning skips were himself, David Powell and Frank Dodsley, with the overall score 87-22 to the captain. Awarding two points per winning rink plus two points for the total, the result was an honourable draw. In the Clarke White Buckhurst Hill lost 6-0 to Connaught. In the Thursday Fours League Division Two, the B team beat the C team 22-13. In Division Four, the A team lost 18-19 to Epping A, the D team drew 21-21 with Higham Hill B and the E team lost 9-31 to Chingford Ainslie Wood D.

WADHAM: Local bowlers will be saddened to learn of the death of Wadham stalwart Dick Kent, while playing on his home green. He had just started a singles competition when he collapsed. A three-rink friendly against Halex on adjacent rinks was abandoned as a mark of respect.

In the Thursday Fours, Wadham's Bert Scott, Tony Marsh, John Henninger and Len Smith beat Chingford 29-20, but in the Simon Shield against Connaught, Ron Farnell, Len Smith, Doug Talbot and Barry Bates gained Wadham's only point 17-17.

In the Valence League against Clementswood, Bert Scott, Derek Baptie and Len Smith won 21-11, but Derek Brown, Harry Snares and John Henninger lost 7-25, as did Ron Farnell, Ed Stevens and Bob George 9-26.

WANSTEAD bowlers enjoyed a successful tour to the Isle of Wight last week.

On their return they beat Barley to reach the final of the Ilford and District Knockout Competition. Ian Robertson, the vice-captain, Dave Brackett and skip John Pluck beat Kenny Weames, Roy Wilson, Dennis Houseman and Mike Durston 23-19.

They will meet the winners of the semi-final between Wanstead Central and Wanstead's Rowland Beckett, Terry Batchelor, Alf Kitchener and Bryan Kelly in the final on September 9.

WANSTEAD CENTRAL kept alive their chances of retaining the Valence Triples League Trophy with a 55-41 victory against Salamander in their final Western Division fixture. Salamander had already won the division and Central had to take all three rinks and the maximum seven points to reach the play-offs by virtue of being top runners-up from the three divisions. Brian Jones, Jim Reynolds, Rod Hudson 24-12; Terry Lichkin, Colin Foster, Steve Welsh 14-13; Keith Lloyd, Len Welton, Bob Druce 17-16. Central's superior shot difference saw them reach the play-offs semi-finals - due to be played last night - at the expense of Barley.

Central A have reached the final of the Group Five Unbadged Double Fours competition, after beating Woodford 36-26 in the semi-final. Brian Jones, John Woolford, Bill Wray, Steve Welsh 8-18; Terry Lichkin, Keith Lloyd, Russell Hughes, Bob Druce 28-8. They meet Valentines Park in the final on Sunday.

Central won their final Redbridge Afternoon League fixture 47-40 against Aldersbrook. Mick Smallwood, Dave Peterson, John Ellis, Bill Wray 24-21; Frank Wood, Henry Seabrook, Brian Jones, Len Welton 23-19. They go forward to the play-off final at Clay Hall on September 3.

In their final Foresters Triples League fixture of the season Central defeated Aveling Park 59-54, gaining nine points out of 17. Fred Frid, John Sankey, Bill Wray 17-10; Ryan Kenny, Mick Smallwood, Russell Hughes 18-11; Tony Pratt, Peter Norgate, Bob Anderson 15-17; Gerry Rose, John Ellis, Mick Bird 9-16.

Bob Druce and team-mate Keith Lloyd won through to the London Parks Pairs final, beating John O'Flynn and Simon Evans from the City Of London 18-9 in the semi-finals. Dave Peterson and Derrick Kendrick beat a Silverthorn pair in the Walthamstow & District Pairs semi-finals.
