LOUGHTON: Leisure centre pool due to reopen
LOUGHTON Leisure Centre has been accused of poor maintenance levels after it took over two weeks to fix a fault in the swimming pool.
The Traps Hill centre had to close its pool and ground floor showers on December 19 following a fault with its heating equipment.
Staff have blamed the long wait to fix the problem on a lack of maintenance staff over the festive period.
Manager George Lampshire said: "It's been out of action since just before Christmas. We had a problem with the water system which meant we couldn't heat the pool and showers. It's quite a big maintenance issue so we couldn't open the pool, and because this happened right before Christmas it was difficult to get hold of the maintenance contractors."
Darren Scates, of High Beech Road, Loughton, who takes his six-year-old daughter, Rosie, swimming in the pool every week, said the maintenance work is not good enough.
He said: "It's not the first problem they've had. It's been going on for a while now - almost since it opened - and it must affect everyone. It's a relatively new pool. I can't believe they can't fix it properly. You have to wonder if there's a financial issue."
Mr Lampshire said: "We apologise for any inconvenience. Sometimes these mechanical things fail and we have to close things down for health and safety reasons."
The pool is due to reopen tomorrow (Wednesday).
